The Veles Ensemble is a classical string trio based in London, UK, dedicated to exploring rarely heard masterpieces and breathing new life into classical music on the concert stage. A special focus of the ensemble is promoting new compositions and contemporary music, with two highly acclaimed CDs released on the Toccata Classics label: the latest featuring chamber music by 20th-century composer and Schoenberg student Egon Wellesz, which earned a four-star review from BBC Music Magazine and was selected as one of The Guardian’s Picks of the Week. Their debut CD with chamber music by British composer Steve Elcock was celebrated for its ‘marvellous performances’ by Gramophone magazine.
Co-founded by cellist Evva Mizerska and violinist Hartmut Richter in 2016, the Veles Ensemble quickly evolved into a rich collaboration with violist Ralitsa Naydenova, who joined shortly after. Together, their artistry and dedication shaped the ensemble’s distinctive sound, leading to remarkable collaborations and recordings. Hartmut’s exceptional vision and musicianship were instrumental in this journey, and though he has embarked on new adventures in Canada, he remains an honorary member, with the ensemble looking forward to future projects with him.
Continuing the Veles Ensemble’s tradition of musical excellence, we are thrilled to welcome Adriana Cristea as our violinist. An award-winning musician with an extensive performance background, Adriana has captivated audiences across Europe and beyond, appearing in prestigious venues and festivals such as the George Enescu Festival. Her expressive playing, technical mastery, and artistic depth bring a fresh yet complementary dynamic to the ensemble.
In addition to the Veles Ensemble’s recordings for Toccata Classics, the ensemble members have individually recorded on labels such as NAXOS, Toccata Classics, and DUX. Recent performances have taken the Veles Ensemble to festivals and concert halls across the UK and Europe, including France, Slovakia, and Scotland, as well as live performances on BBC Radio3’s In Tune.

About the name: Veles is one of the main old slavic gods: the god of earth, waters, forests and the underworld. However, he is also the god of magic – and along with that – music, as these were believed to be closely related.
